What BestPlaces Users Say about Houghton Lake

Houghton Lake, Michigan is a small town located in Roscommon County in the northern part of the state. This town is known for its beautiful lake and outdoor activities, making it a popular tourist destination and a peaceful place to live. With a population of just over 3,000 people, Houghton Lake offers a tight-knit community and a slower pace of life. However, before considering a move to this town, it is important to hear from those who have experienced living there. Below are excerpts from four different user reviews on BestPlaces.net, providing insights into the pros and cons of living in Houghton Lake.

1. From user "John C," who has lived in Houghton Lake for over 20 years, we learn about the town's charm and friendly community: "Houghton Lake is a great place to live if you enjoy small town living. The people are friendly and welcoming, and there is a strong sense of community here."

2. In contrast, user "Samantha R" shares her experience of the harsh winters in Houghton Lake: "I've lived in Houghton Lake for 5 years now and while I love the summers here, the winters can be brutal. The snow and cold temperatures can make it difficult to get around and do things outside."

3. Another user, "Paul G," praises the natural beauty of Houghton Lake and its surrounding areas: "If you love being outdoors, Houghton Lake is the place for you. The lake is beautiful and there are plenty of nearby hiking trails and parks to explore. It's a nature lover's dream."

4. However, user "Jennifer M" highlights the lack of job opportunities in Houghton Lake: "I moved to Houghton Lake for a job opportunity but unfortunately, there aren't many job options here. Unless you work remotely or are willing to commute to a bigger city, it can be tough to find employment in this area."

Overall, it seems that Houghton Lake offers a picturesque setting and a close-knit community, but it may not be suitable for those who dislike extreme weather or are looking for job opportunities. As user "Paul G" sums it up, "Houghton Lake is a beautiful place to live, but it's not for everyone. It's important to consider what you value most in a place to live before making a decision."

Great for people who like to be on the water or on - 8/15/2013
This is a rural resort area. You must be able to embrace the rural lifestyle. There's no real shopping opportunities other than Walmart, Kmart, Peebles, Dunhams, Tractor Supply. If you want to shop, it's a 45 minute drive to a city with more of a selection. I cope with online purchasing. There are no real jobs which pay above minimum wage, unless you are able to work online. That being said, if you like to fish, ice fish, hunt, boat, trap, cross country ski, snowmobile or just spend time on the water or in the woods, you will love it here! There are many camp grounds, cabins for rent, and plenty of chessy old time touristy family activities too. The people are friendly, there's a one of a kind log movie theater, several diner type eateries, bars, and fast food. There are some cool mom and pop shops from butchers to antique shops. Cost of living is low, but gas prices are high. We have an emergency clinic with a major hospital within twenty miles. I have no kids of school age, so can Read More

Quality good.... - 4/29/2008
The quality of life here for most depends on how you look at it.
If your looking for a medium to high paying job there realy are none, and there's hardly any jobs that pay the average of 7.00 an hour.
Jobs here are hard to come by, your lucky if you find a job.
The quality of life here can be good as far as clean water and clean air, it realy is refreshing not to smell auto exaust or pollution, as we realy don't have any.
Life here is laid back and realaxed for us, we are out of the hustle and bustle of city life, and live in the woods on our own property, watching the deer, raccoons, and occassionaly hear coyotes, and other wildlife.
Life is what you make it, and being away from the stores and malls and especialy the traffic is realy my kind of a great quality of life here.Read More

The weather here in Houghton lake, resident of 12 - 4/29/2008
The climate here is...well..cold... seems like most of the time and one does get cabin fever when March rolls around, if not sooner. Can't wait for summer!
If you love the cold then this the place to be, plenty of outdoor activites, we have tip up town that's held in January, they have fishing contests, snomobile races, carnival, beer tent, parades, etc.,
We even had a movie filmed right on Houghton Lake staring Earnest Bourgnine called 'Frozen Stupid'!
There are ski resorts not too far away, and a lot of people come up to enjoy the trails through the woods on snomobiles.
In the summer we have the lake, and also Higgins lake nearby with boating and swimming and beaches.
Houghton Lake has had milfoil issues and has been treated, so sometimes people get swimmers itch, but we never got it...at least...not yet!
Spring goes by very quickly, sometimes we have a very fast spring and it goes right away into the warmer summer months, but is welcomed.Read More
